Prolapse
Feb 02nd, 2010, 9:55pm

Has anyone had experience of a prolapsed cervix in a sow? One of mine (just three years' old - on fourth litter) has four days to go before farrowing and today had a something the size of a large grapefruit sticking out of her vulva. Didn't seem bothered about it - no other change in behaviour. It was out for about 15 mins, then, when the dogs started barking at someone outside the barn, they gave her a shock and it popped back in.
Our vets aren't pig experts. The senior partner said to keep it lubricated with vaseline when it's out, but no other constructive advice. When I asked what if it pops out and then goes back in, taking muck and bits of straw inside, he said not to worry - deal with any infection later. Not a great deal of help.
Is there a chance that she might not be able to farrow through the prolapse? What should I do if this happens (apart from calling the vet)?
Be grateful of any advice.

LIz

Sorry to hear of the prolapse, I cannot advice on current action except, when we had on in a ewe that kept re-occuring so close to birth date the vet carried out ceasarian.

would recomend sow goes for meat after this current litter as she will only be weaker back there now.

Good luck and hope all goes well.

Thanks for reading the post. I wouldn't have been stupid enough to put her through another pregnancy after this one.

Glad to hear it Liz but was giving general advice for all readers. Has she been kept on sloping ground by any chance, this is what our vet has put our prolases down to.

If anyone is interested, survived the prolapse. Six live (six dead - five stillborn, one sat on). Vet advised keeping her back end up, which meant using a crate for a couple of days beforehand, which I wasn't keen on, but had to do for her sake. Had to push the cervix back in a couple of times, but it held okay. Just making the occasional guest appearance now, but nothing like before.
Glad all that's over.

Hello,

We had even worse a couple of years back, a double prolapse. The short term cure was butterfly stitches to keep it all in and then a diet that included plenty of oily foods. The stitches were in place for a couple of weeks. The sow went another week with all "in place" until it all came out again, at which point she was put down.
The next case was just a single prolapse of the vulva on a gilt. Again we got butterfly stitches put in, but only so that we could get her fit enough to go to the abattoir.

Cheers

Gavin

p.s. all were living on flat ground.
